Canadian Faith Leaders Unite to Urge Continued Global Aid
Canadian faith-based organizations leverage billions of dollars to help the poorest of the poor around the globe, demonstrating that caring for our neighbours, wherever they are, is central to Canada’s leadership in the world. In a powerful display of ecumenism, the leaders of almost 30 national Christian denominations have issued an urgent, non-partisan appeal to politicians, requesting the preservation and strengthening of Canada’s global aid commitments.
This initiative, developed by a consortium of Christian faith-based organizations with decades of international cooperation experience, comes at a critical juncture as Canada prepares for an election and other countries cut international aid budgets.
“We believe Canada has a unique opportunity to reaffirm its role as a global leader in peace, compassion, and justice”
“At a time when global crises are escalating and other nations are retreating, we believe Canada has a unique opportunity to reaffirm its role as a global leader in peace, compassion, and justice,” said Laura Solberg, Executive Director of Kentro Christian Network. “Our shared values as Canadians – and our faith’s call to care for our neighbours – compel us to advocate and provide wise and effective resources for those who are most vulnerable, wherever they may be.”
In this election year, Canada may see leadership changes in the coming months and an examination of government spending and priorities. This letter from Christian leaders encourages Governmental Leaders and Canadian citizens to continue our legacy of strong leadership in making the world a better place. This includes the prioritization of international cooperation and assistance by the federal government.
“International cooperation cannot be ignored”
While there is much pressure to focus on domestic issues, faith leaders affirm that Canada also has a vital and important role to play globally. International relief and development programs are essential and life-saving for millions around the world, both addressing needs in real-time and helping prevent crises before they reach our borders. International development and humanitarian assistance are central to Canada’s foreign affairs strategy, making the world—and Canada—safer and more stable.
“Development and international cooperation cannot be ignored; not only is it critical to securing peace, dignity, and prosperity both globally and at home, it has significant implications for how faith-based organizations can pursue our shared vision of flourishing lives and communities everywhere. While government priorities may shift, Canada must remain resolute in its commitment to uphold human dignity, peace, and justice,” said Leah Reesor-Keller, Transitional Executive Director with KAIROS Canada, part of the consortium of faith-based organizations that initiated the letter.
